On July 23, 2024, Bausch + Lomb announced the acquisition of ophthalmic diagnostic company Trukera Medical, which will help expand its U.S. surgical business and strengthen its leadership in the dry eye disease (DED) space.
Trukera Medical's ScoutPro® is a portable device that accurately measures tear osmolarity, a key indicator of DED and ocular surface disease. If left untreated before surgery, elevated osmolarity can negatively impact the outcomes of corneal, cataract, and refractive surgeries. Luc Bonnefoy, President of Bausch + Lomb's Surgical Business, stated that ScoutPro has become a valuable preoperative diagnostic tool for U.S. surgeons and is expected to play an even greater role in the future.
Despite the prevalence of DED in cataract surgery patients, preoperative testing is still underutilized. Studies show that elevated osmolarity significantly affects post-surgical visual quality and patient satisfaction. Through this acquisition, Bausch + Lomb aims to enhance dry eye management and preoperative preparation, ultimately improving surgical outcomes and patient experience.
