【Title】Association between bone mineral density and presumed nasolacrimal duct obstruction in adults: A cross-sectional analysis of NHANES data
【Journal】Am J Otolaryngol
【Authors】Hua Sun; Xin Shen; Kegao Liu
【Summary】This cross-sectional study investigated the association between systemic bone mineral density (BMD) and presumed nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO) using NHANES 2005–2008 data. Among 5,423 adults aged ≥40 years, the weighted prevalence of presumed NLDO was 8.4%. Each 1-SD decrease in lumbar spine BMD was associated with a 32% higher odds of presumed NLDO (OR 1.32, 95% CI 1.15–1.52), while osteoporosis was associated with an 86% higher odds (OR 1.86, 95% CI 1.34–2.58). The association was stronger in females and adults older than 60 years. The findings suggest a potential link between systemic skeletal health and the bony nasolacrimal canal, although longitudinal studies are needed to establish causality.
【Title】Short- and long-term impact of silicone hydrogel contact lens wear on the ocular surface and anterior segment: a confocal microscopy study
【Journal】Int Ophthalmol
【Authors】Merve Simsek; Murat Kasikci; Cem Simsek
【Summary】This prospective study evaluated the short- and long-term effects of silicone hydrogel contact lens (SHCL) wear on the ocular surface and anterior segment in 30 male participants using clinical assessments and in vivo confocal microscopy. After 1 month, OSDI scores and corneal dendritic cell density increased significantly, indicating transient ocular surface inflammation and discomfort, but both returned to baseline after 1 year. Corneal sensitivity remained unchanged at 1 month but decreased significantly after 1 year (3.32 ± 1.06 vs. 2.03 ± 1.26 cm; p < 0.001). No significant changes were observed in subbasal nerve density, morphology, tortuosity, or reflectivity, suggesting no detectable structural nerve alterations under the study conditions.
